GLSEN Houston strives to assure that each member of every school community is valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity and expression. As a father of two sons, I wanted to help raise awareness of the issues and change the dangerous culture of intolerance within our schools.
Interviewing about 25 LGBT students across Houston, we were surprised to learn that insensitive adults are as much a source of the problem as students’ peers. As a result, we developed companion pieces: one for students, one for educators.
Designed to facilitate thought and discussion at GLSEN workshops, the brochure content doesn’t sugar-coat the subject matter. We used casual illustrations in lieu of photography to protect the identity of featured minors in case studies. Response scenarios provide readers with solutions for diffusing bullying situations.
Other GLSEN chapters across the U.S. have requested the brochure, which we hope will continue to facilitate open discussion and greater tolerance.
